Marquez: “The weather made things difficult”

Marc Marquez managed 20 laps in the mixed conditions of the first day of testing at Phillip Island, finishing in 12th on the timesheets.

Marquez was celebrating his 23rd birthday in Australia and managed to complete 20 laps in total in the mixed conditions. He focused mainly on running on the wets, but managed a couple of laps on the intermediates on a drying track. Unlike most riders Marquez did not head out towards the end of the day on slicks and his best time of 1’35.354, which he set on the intermediates, was good enough to finish in 12th. This meant he was 3.590s behind the pace of Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Yakhnich) who topped the timesheets, although the Italian set his time on slicks.

The double MotoGP™ World Champion was using just one engine in Phillip Island, the 2016 spec version, as he evaluates the chassis he finished the 2015 season on back-to-back with the 2016 one.

Day two of the Phillip Island test kicks off at 9.45am local time on Tuesday.

Marc Marquez: “This first day in Australia went well, but the weather made things difficult. We tried wet tyres on the first two runs today and I felt quite comfortable, with plenty of rear grip. It was also important to test the electronics in these conditions, because it was the first time we had a chance to use them in the wet, and it worked well. I did some laps on the intermediate tyre. Anyway it's hard to know when you should use them. It's a pity because was difficult to gather data; the conditions were constantly changing between wet and drying out, due to the intermittent rain and wind. At the end of the day it improved a little, but we decided not to go out again because the weather forecast is better for tomorrow.”
