Lorenzo: “We need to improve”

Fifth after the opening two practice sessions saw Jorge Lorenzo conclude Friday as the fastest Yamaha rider in America.

A 2’04.901 secured Jorge Lorenzo fifth in Free Practice 2 and fifth overall on the opening day of practice at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas. The time was 0.3s faster than his time from FP1, a marginal improvement and as such he would have liked more. A faster time could have potentially come had his number one bike not encountered issues, keeping him inside the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP pit box and forcing him to use his second bike, his feeling not as strong on it. Even with the issues he was able to end within a second of Friday’s leader Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), one of only six riders to do so. His feeling may be better than in previous years, but Lorenzo is in no way content with his position.

If he had had access to his preferred bike, Lorenzo believes he could have gone half a second faster which could have seen him end the session in second. With a potential half a second in his pocket, Lorenzo will aim for the front row during tomorrow’s Qualifying session. Only once in his career has the factory Yamaha rider taken to the podium, when he was third in 2013.

Jorge Lorenzo: “In general the feeling is much better than over other years here. We need to improve. For some reason we had some problems with the first bike and couldn‘t take full advantage of the first session and show the maximum potential that we have right now, which I think is half a second faster than our lap time today. Let‘s see if tomorrow we can be on the first row.”
