Navarro strikes first in Austin

Navarro strikes first in Austin

Moto3™ FP1 saw Jorge Navarro charge to the top of the timesheets ahead of Antonelli and Fenati in a tight first session.

Weather conditions were great for the first session and unlike in Argentina, there was no issue with a dirty track as the MotoAmerica series had already been out. First out on track was Argentina GP race winner, Khairul Idham Pawi (Honda Team Asia), the Malaysian rider learning yet another new circuit. Fellow rookie Joan Mir (Leopard Racing) raced at the Circuit of the Americas back in 2013 in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, the Spaniard refreshing his memory on the opening day.

A numbers of riders traded places at the top of the standings throughout the session but it was Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) leading as the 40 minutes of practice came to an end. The Spaniard topped the session with a 2’17.433, 0.168s ahead of Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) in second. This is Navarro’s second time at the Circuit of the Americas, the Estrella Galicia 0,0 rider failing to finish in 2015.

A pair of Italians chased Navarro in the session, Antonelli setting a 2’17.601 for second. 2015’s pole position time was a 2’15.344, proving there’s still significant improvement to be made in the coming sessions. Romano Fenati (Sky Racing Team VR46) completed Free Practice 1 in third and was within half a second of Navarro. After failing to score points in Argentina, Fenati needs to return to the top ten to continue pushing for the title.

Aron Canet (Estrella Galicia 0,0) was the leading rookie in fourth, able to set a 2’18.047 and end 0.614s behind his teammate in just his first visit to the Austin track. Fabio Quartararo (Leopard Racing) completed the top five. The French rider scored his first ever World Championship podium here in 2015 and was immediately on the pace.

Livio Loi (RW Racing GP), Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Joan Mir (Leopard Racing), Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Moto3) and Jakub Kornfeil (Drive M7 SIC Racing Team) formed the top ten featuring six Hondas and four KTMs.

Several riders had their lap times removed for exceeding track limits, frequently at Turn 19. Fabio Quartararo was a repeat offender of this.

There was an early fall for Juanfran Guevara (RBA Racing Team) he was unharmed and able to re-join the session later. Jorge Martin (Aspar Mahindra Team Moto3) suffered a late fall at Turn 1.
