Lowes: “I expect another hard fought race weekend”

Moto2™ World Championship leader Sam Lowes heads to Jerez ready to fight for victory once more in the tight intermediate class.

The Moto2™ World Championship is the tightest of any of the three, four points splitting the top four riders. Leading the way is Sam Lowes, the Brit’s back-to-back second place finishes in Argentina and Austin helping him to overcome a disappointing start in Qatar. Keeping the championship lead won’t be easy at the Gran Premio Red Bull de España as not only was the first pre-season test held there, but a number of riders have also run in private tests at the track. Fortunately for Lowes he and the Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 team ran several private tests at the circuit, and were under the lap record during the official test. With hundreds of laps already under his belt at the Jerez circuit on the Kalex, Lowes is set to hit the ground running and continue where he left off in testing.

In his previous two visits to Jerez in the Moto2™ class, Lowes has failed to score any points. In 2014 he crashed twice during the race and in 2015 he slid back to 20th after starting on the second row. Lowes will be hoping that the championship lead gives him the boost he needs to score points and once more battle for victory. With all the testing riders have done in Jerez, we may very well see a number of new names towards the front in both Qualifying and the race.

Sam Lowes: “In Jerez all the riders made a lot of testing before the start of the season, so I expect another hard fought race weekend. During winter testing we’ve always had a good feeling with the bike at this track, so hopefully we can make a good race. I like the circuit a lot, although actually my results have been so and so in the last two years. Also, it’s always a pleasure to race at Jerez because there is always a big crowd and a great atmosphere. I can’t wait to get back on track, especially now that we are coming off from two good races and we are leading the championship.”
