Bagnaia: “We can be fighting to win”

Bagnaia: “We can be fighting to win”

For the second time in 2016, Francesco Bagnaia steps onto the podium after a race long battle for victory.

Throughout the 2016 season, Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia has consistently been the leading Mahindra rider. The Spanish GP, as in Qatar, saw him once again able to escape with the top riders and put up a spirited fight. Mahindra have continued to work hard behind the scenes to help bring the MGP3O towards the front of the Moto3™ World Championship and Bagnaia was able to push the machine to the max and show what it is capable of. Many have been critical of the power of the Mahindra’s engine, but Bagnaia was able to grab the lead into turn one once the lights went out. As he diced with the likes of Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46) and Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) he was also able to get past with the help of the slipstream. The trio traded places throughout the race, but both Bagnaia and the Mahindra shone under braking and through the corners, ‘Pecco’ one of the latest brakers in Moto3™ and regularly able to get up the inside of his rivals.

It would eventually become a battle for second and third as Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) roared past Bagnaia, Navarro and Bulega after starting last. In true Jerez style the last corner is where it would all be decided, Bagnaia just being pushed wide by Bulega and settling for third place. After a race long battle, third was a brilliant result for Bagnaia and his Aspar Mahindra Team Moto3 crew who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend. The result moves Bagnaia to fifth in the championship and he now heads to Le Mans, the scene of his first career podium in 2015, with even more confidence. All three of Bagnaia’s podiums have seen him finish third, taking to the top two steps remains his goal for the rest of the season.

Francesco Bagnaia: “We have taken a big step forward here at Jerez, my team have done a great job. This is our second podium of the season, again in third place. I am really happy with the result and also the way we have been able to repay all the hard work done by the team and by Mahindra recently. I will try to produce another great race like this one at Le Mans. I think that with the job we are doing right now we can be fighting to win.”
