Luthi: “Very quickly that I was not alone”

Luthi: “Very quickly that I was not alone”

Engine and electrical issues made for a tense race start for Tom Luthi who went on to take third in at one of his favourite tracks.

Sunday got off to a tense start for Tom Luthi as he experienced both engine and electrical problems ahead of the race. Fortunately his Garage Plus Interwetten team were able to resolve the major issues before the race started. After a tense time on the grid, Luthi made an almost perfect start to lead the race for the first six laps. Slowly but surely Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40) hunted Luthi down, pushing the Swiss rider to second. Subsequently Luthi’s pace dropped and he slid further down to fourth, battling with Lorenzo Baldassarri (Forward Team) for several laps. The Italian would eventually fall from the race, cementing Luthi safely in third place for his second podium of the year. While it wasn’t the result he wanted, Luthi did make up points on both Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) and Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) and moved ahead of Zarco to occupy third in the championship.

Tom Luthi: “After the warm-up, one of my mechanics, Achim, heard a funny noise coming out of the side of the engine. Then when I went out on track my dashboard wasn't working normally; I was worried a bit but the team was able to fix this electronic problem, updating it with the computers. My start was really good. I was quickly four tenths ahead but I also realised very quickly that I was not alone. Alex Rins had a great pace, I wasn't far off in terms of performance but I lost contact during my battle with Baldassarri. This podium is important because it puts me back in a provisional third position in the championship standings. I am already looking forward to Mugello, where I just need to avoid making the same mistake as last year where I crashed out of the lead."
