Espargaro: “There really is no track like it on the planet”

It’s hard to find someone more excited than Pol Espargaro to be racing in Mugello, even though it looks set to be a hard fought weekend.

The past two races have seen Pol Espargaro secure back-to-back top Independent Team rider honours, helping him to defend sixth in the World Championship. In France he took a sensational fifth place, a great reward for his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team at their home race. Espargaro has no plans of changing his performance in Mugello, eager to make it three races in a row as the top Independent Team rider and take his sixth top eight finish of 2016. The Spaniard has been one of the most consistent riders of the 2016 season, even the factory Yamahas have been unable to take a top ten in every race. It won’t be an easy weekend as the likes of Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing) on the satellite Ducati is sure to be strong at Mugello, especially down the spectacular home straight. Espargaro's best result in Mugello came when he was second in the 2012 Moto2™ race, his two previous premier class races at the Italian track have yielded a fifth and sixth place finish.

Pol Espargaro: “As usual, I am looking forward to going to Mugello and racing at the world famous circuit. There really is no track like it on the planet and it is one of my favourite Grand Prix’s. Having said that, we know that this weekend will be a real challenge because the circuit demands speed, especially with the long straight. I truly believe that it won’t be easy to fight against the satellite Ducati’s who will certainly be strong because of their power on their home track. Yet, we will do our best to come out on top and we have to get another good result in order to continue the progression that we have made so far this year. The team and I have made some positive steps forward since the Jerez test and I feel confident on the bike now, so we need to get to work straight away in order to reach our target of being the top independent rider on Sunday afternoon again."
