Dark skies loom as Pawi shines in FP1

Dark skies loom as Pawi shines in FP1

The magnificent Mugello weekend starts with Pawi, Ono and Bagnaia ruling the damp morning conditions.

Free Practice 1 for the Moto3™ World Championship began under overcast skies, over night rain leaving the track cool and damp. Riders went out on wet tyres, taking tentative first steps on the Italian track. Several of the championship contenders, such as Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) chose to sit out the opening part of the session.

The action increased towards the end of the session as conditions improved, Khairul Idham Pawi (Honda Team Asia) continuing to show his incredible ability in tricky conditions. A 2’09.992 saw the Malaysian lead the session, the only rider under the 2’10s barrier.

It was close at the top as his teammate Hiroki Ono (Honda Team Asia) benefitted from a bit of a slipstream from Pawi to snag second, 0.009s behind. Ono has also shown well in mixed conditions in the past, challenging for the podium early in the 2015 Japanese GP.

Francesco Bagnaia (Aspar Mahindra Team Moto3) completed the top three thanks to a 2’10.143. In 2015 ‘Pecco’ came tantalisingly close to a home podium as he took fourth, Mahindra’s third fourth place finish at the circuit. Wet or dry, expect the Italian to challenge up the front.

Karel Hanika (Platinum Bay Real Estate) showed well on his Mahindra as well, ending fourth and ahead of Nicolo Bulega (SKY Racing Team VR46). All of the top five were within a quarter of a second.

Jorge Martin (Aspar Mahindra Team Moto3), Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Schedl GP Racing), Gabriel Rodrigo (RBA Racing Team), Alexis Masbou (Peugeot MC Saxoprint) and Niccolo Antonelli (Ongetta-Rivacold) formed the top ten.

Adam Norrodin (Drive M7 SIC Racing Team) was the first faller of the weekend, coming off at Turn 2.

Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Team) was back in action after missing the Le Mans weekend due to a broken wrist. He chose not to lap during FP1.

The lightweight class will be back out for Free Practice 2 at 13:10 Local Time.
