In Barcelona Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing) surprised even himself when he secured fourth on the grid for Sunday’s race. He eventually ended down in 11th, but was able to prove there’s still speed in the GP14.2. It’s speed he’s keen to show again in Assen, a track where he has twice been twelfth and once seventh in the premier class. Barbera has few issues in Qualifying, the Spaniard only needing to improve his and the bike’s performance over race distance. In Barcelona his race was hampered by rear tyre wear, an issue that should be less extreme in Assen with cooler temperatures forecast for the weekend.
A post-race test in Barcelona the Monday after the race gave Barbera and the team a chance to explore several settings as well as test new tyres for Michelin. Barbera loved the tyres and is hoping Michelin will debut them in the coming rounds.
Hector Barbera: “The Monday test at Catalunya was good for us. We worked with the electronics, but we also tested some new Michelin tyres that I really liked. I hope they bring them for the next races as these tyres could help us to get closer. I also did some hard training with my bicycle in the last two weeks, so I’ll be strong at Assen. I like the track and I love the fast sectors. Last year I was the best Open in Qualifying, but then someone blew me out of the track in the first lap, so I’m looking forward to complete the race this season.”
