Pirro: “I hope he gets well soon”

Once more Michele Pirro will fill in for the injured Loris Baz, making his sixth appearance of 2016.

Michele Pirro (Avintia Racing) may be employed by Ducati as a test rider but he’s getting plenty of racing in as he continues to be the number one replacement rider for the Bologna factory. Loris Baz had hoped to return to action in Assen but his foot is taking more time than expected and Pirro has again been called up to action. In Barcelona Pirro took 15th place despite tyre issues and is hoping for more in Assen. Despite being the Ducati test rider, the Italian had not ridden the GP14.2 in some time and is looking to continue improving his feeling in Assen. In 2012 Pirro achieved his best premier class finish in Assen when he was ninth, taking 14th place the following year. This will be his first visit to the Dutch track since 2013.

From his six appearances in 2016, Pirro has scored points on all but one occasion: when he was 16th in Jerez, a track where all the Ducati riders struggled. He may not have a full time ride but with 19 points he sits ahead of Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Yakhnich), Loris Baz (Avintia Racing) and Yonny Hernandez (Aspar Team MotoGP) in the championship.

Michele Pirro: “I’m really happy to race again for Avintia Racing, but at the same time sad for Loris, so I hope he gets well soon. I’ll have the chance to do more kilometres with the GP14 and we’ll work from the base we built at Barcelona. I like Assen, although my last race there was two years ago. But I’m confident on improving our performance from Barcelona, where the rear tyre dropped down a lot and we were not able to get the best of the bike. I also want to thank Ducati for letting me race at Assen.”
