Fenati dominates Moto3™ field in FP1

Romano Fenati led the field as the German GP got underway, the Italian looking to get his championship challenge back on track.

It was a cold morning at the Sachsenring, the Moto3™ World Championship hitting the track with an ambient and ground temperature of just 13°C. The GoPro Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland marked a return to action for Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0), the Spaniard having missed Assen due to a broken leg sustained while training.

Midway through the session a light misting of rain hit the German circuit, sending everyone into the pits. After the brief interlude the skies began to clear and riders were able to go faster as conditions slowly but surely began to improve. On his 18th lap of 18, Romano Fenati (SKY Racing Team VR46) set a 1’28.196 to lead the Moto3™ field by 0.411s. The Italian is hoping to close the gap to Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) once again. Binder concluded the session in second place.

Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing Moto3) was the third fastest rider, 0.027s behind Binder. Fenati’s lead in the session was significant, but it’s tight behind.

Jorge Martin (Pull & Bear Aspar Mahindra Moto3) did incredibly well to recover from technical problems at the start of the session, ending fourth. Bo Bendsneyder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) completed the top five.

Andrea Migno (SKY Racing Team VR46), Andrea Locatelli (Leopard Racing), Francesco Bagnaia (Pull & Bear Aspar Mahindra Team), Gabriel Rodrigo (RBA Racing Team) and John McPhee (Peugeot MC Saxoprint) completed the top ten. McPhee in particular showed exceedingly well after a tough start to the year.

Alexis Masbou (Peugeot MC Saxoprint) was the first faller of the event, slipping off at Turn 1. Philipp Oettl (Schedl GP Racing) crashed the following lap at the same corner, one of the trickiest at the circuit.
