Luthi tops the tables in FP1

Championship challenger opens his Malaysian GP account on top

Moto2™ began in dry conditions at Sepang International Circuit, before a Red Flag then came out following some falls at T14, including a crash for Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) that then saw the Brit collected by Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) a few moments later after having rejoined.

With the rain then coming down once the session continued, laptimes couldn’t be improved further and it left Luthi clear at the top, from Marcel Schrotter (AGR Team), and Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider Alex Marquez. Marquez is back on track following a crash in Australia with Julian Simon after Simon slowed on the racing line, and the 2014 Moto3™ World Champion then missed the race.

Axel Pons (AGR Team) was fourth quickest, ahead of home hero Hafizh Syahrin (Petronas Raceline Malaysia), who completed the top five. Australian GP protagonist Mattia Pasini (Italtrans Racing Team) was P6, with Misano winner and compatriot Lorenzo Baldassarri (Forward Team) back in P7 as the laptimes began to spread out. Xavier Simeon (QMMF Racing Team), Jonas Folger (Dynavolt Intact GP) and Xavi Vierge (Tech 3 Racing).
