Sunday Guide

- Takaaki Nakagami (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) is on pole position for the first time since Sachsenring last year and the fifth time, in his 102st Moto2™ Grand Prix start.

- Nakagami’s pole position is the first for a Japanese rider at his home GP in the intermediate class since Shuhei Aoyama, Hiroshi’s brother, at Motegi back in 2007.

- Nakagami will be aiming to win his third race of his career and to become the first Japanese rider in the intermediate class to do so in Japan since Hiroshi Aoyama back in 2006.

- Álex Márquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) will start from second on the grid, his eleventh front row start of the season. He has always failed to score points at Motegi since he joined the Moto2™ class back in 2015, but he won twice in Moto3™ (2013 and 2014).

- Xavi Vierge (Tech 3 Racing) will complete the front row, which is the best qualifying result of his Grand Prix career. This is the first front row start for the Mistral 610 Tech3 machine since Mike Di Meglio qualified in second at Phillip Island in 2011.

- Sixth on the grid is the best qualifying result of Hafizh Syahrin (Petronas Raceline Malaysia) since Silverstone last year when he was fifth.

- Tom Lüthi (CarXpert Interwetten) has qualified in 13th; this is his worst qualifying result since he was in the same place on the grid back in Misano 2015. He won twice at Motegi in the Moto2™ class (2014 and 2016).

- Championship leader Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) has qualified in 15th, his worst qualifying result since he was 18th last year at Barcelona. He will be aiming to win his ninth race of the season, which would make him the second rider to achieve that feat in Moto2™ along with Marc Márquez in 2012.
