Schrötter starts 2019 quickest to head Vierge in FP1

German rider leads last year’s teammate by almost two tenths, with Bendsneyder completing the top three

Dynavolt Intact GP’s Marcel Schrötter has set the quickest time in Moto2™ FP1 at the VisitQatar Grand Prix, a 1:59.591 putting him 0.193 ahead of his 2018 teammate Xavi Vierge (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), with Bo Bendsneyder (NTS RW Racing GP) completing the top three.

The times were steady compared to the test in FP1 as the intermediate class bedded themselves in for their opening weekend of competitive action in 2019, with the leading three all setting their best times on lap 14. The returning Tom Luthi (Dynavolt Intact GP) finished fourth, 0.342 separating him from his teammate in P1, with Andrea Locatelli (Italtrans Racing Team) rounding out the top five – 0.370 was the gap.

There were three crashes in the opening Moto2™ session of the weekend, with Jake Dixon (Angel Nieto Team) and Jorge Navarro (+Ego Speed Up) going down unhurt. Iker Lecuona (American Racing KTM) then suffered a big crash on the exit of Turn 3, the Spaniard was up and walking but he headed to the medical centre for a checkup, before going to the hospital for further examination. Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) suffered a mechanical issue towards the end of the session.

The Moto2™ field will be back out for FP2 at 19:05 local time (GMT+3). Tune in to find out who will be Friday’s fastest in Qatar.
