Vietti three tenths clear of Arenas in Moto3™ FP1

The Italian has set a faster lap than we saw all weekend at the Austrian Grand Prix and is closely followed by the Championship leader

SKY Racing Team VR46's Celestino Vietti put down an impressive marker in the opening session of the inaugural BMW M Grand Prix of Styria after the Italian set a faster lap than we saw all weekend just one week ago at the Austrian Grand Prix. Vietti's 1:35.996 is the first sub-1:36 lightweight class lap we've seen around the Red Bull Ring since Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) topped FP3 in 2019. It didn't come without issues for Vietti though, as he tucked the front at Turn 1 just seconds after jumping to the top of the timesheets.

The VR46 man wasn't the only rider to crash in the Styrian sunshine as both Petronas Sprinta Racing's John McPhee and Leopard Racing's Jaume Masia both crashed out unhurt in the opening moments of FP1. Second fastest was last week's race winner Albert Arenas (Valresa Aspar Team), the Championship leader three tenths adrift of the fastest lap. Kömmerling Gresini Moto3's Jeremy Alcoba was half a second back in third, with Arbolino and Raul Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo) a fraction further back in fourth and fifth.

Impressive rookie Deniz Oncu (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) continued his Red Bull Ring form by closing the opening session of the weekend sixth on the timesheets, ahead of Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) and Darryn Binder (CIP Green Power). Completing the top ten was Masia, after his Turn 3 crash, and Ayumu Sasaki (Red Bull KTM Tech 3).
