Arbolino grabs Moto3™ FP1 top spot with new lap record

The Italian was fastest from Öncü and Fenati as the lightweight class kicked off the penultimate weekend of 2020

Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) set a new lap record in Moto3™ FP1 at the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana, his 1:38.413 was good enough to beat Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Tech3) by 0.098 seconds. The Turkish rider finished P2 despite a heavy crash at Turn 6 early in the session, with Romano Fenati (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team) completing the top three.

Unlike seven days ago, it was a dry start to proceedings and the Moto3™ riders took full advantage. Jeremy Alcoba (Kömmerling Gresini Moto3) and European GP race winner Raul Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo) rounded out top five covered by 0.349 seconds in the opening 40-minute stint of the weekend. Championship leader Albert Arenas (Gaviota Aspar Team Moto3) finished P12, one place ahead of main rival Ai Ogura (Honda Team Asia).

SKY Racing Team VR46 teammates Celestino Vietti – who sits third in the title race – and Andrea Migno crashed together at Turn 10, Vietti highsided out and left Migno with nowhere to go – riders ok. Filip Salač (Rivacold Snipers Team) was taken to the medical centre for a check-up after a crash in FP1.

FP2 is coming up at 13:35 local time (GMT+1).
