Bastianini, Lowes, Marini or Bezzecchi: Champion IF…

Four contenders, one race. We’ve done the maths to see what needs to happen for each rider to win the Moto2™ title in Portimao

Heading into the 2020 finale at the Grande Premio MEO de Portugal, four riders have a shot at becoming Moto2™ World Champion. Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team) leads Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) by 14 points, with SKY Racing Team VR46’s Luca Marini and Marco Bezzecchi 18 and 23 back respectively.

To try and get in the know ahead of Sunday’s race, motogp.com has – attempted to – do the mathematics. Bear with us as in the Moto2™ title race, certain results will mean it goes to countback – this could get complicated on Sunday.

ENEA BASTIANINI, CHAMPION IF...

- He finishes 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th

- He finishes 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th: Lowes doesn’t win

- He finishes 9th: Lowes and Marini don’t win

- He finishes 10th, 11th, 12th or 13th: Lowes doesn’t finish better than 3rd and Marini doesn’t win

- He finishes 14th, 15th or fails to score any points: Lowes doesn’t finish on the podium, Marini doesn’t finish better than 3rd and Bezzecchi doesn’t win

SAM LOWES, CHAMPION IF...

- He wins: Bastianini is 5th or lower

- He’s 2nd: Bastianini is 10th or lower (they would finish on the same points, but Lowes would win on number of 2nd place finishes) and Marini doesn’t win

- He’s 3rd: Bastianini is 14th or lower, Marini is 4th or lower (if Marini wins he would finish on more points, if Marini is second the Italian would win the title based on number of 2nd place finishes. Bastianini – if 14th – and Lowes would finish on the same points, Lowes would win the title based on number of 2nd places) and if Bezzecchi doesn't win

LUCA MARINI, CHAMPION IF...

- He wins: Bastianini is 9th (Marini wins title on number of wins) or lower

- He’s 2nd: Bastianini is 14th (Marini wins on number of 2nd places) or lower and Lowes is 3rd (again, Marini wins on number of 2nd places) or lower

MARCO BEZZECCHI, CHAMPION IF...

- He wins: Bastianini is 14th or lower, Lowes is 3rd (Bezzecchi would win on number of 3rd places) or lower and Marini isn’t 2nd (Marini would win on number of 2nd places)
