"I can fight for victories this year" - Aron Canet

Speaking from the Circuito de Almeria, the diminutive Spaniard says he's targetting the top step of the Moto2™ podium in his sophomore year

Runner-up in the 2019 Moto3™ World Championship, Rookie of the Year in the 2020 Moto2™ World Championship and now Aron Canet (Aspar Team) is targetting the title. The Valencian was seriously impressive in his debut year in the lightweight class, ending up as the top Speed Up rider in the standings ahead of both factory men, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Jorge Navarro.

A couple of injuries hampered his progress and momentum throughout the year, meaning he's yet to taste podium success. The 21-year-old is confident that's just a matter of time, however, with his sights firmly set on the top step of the podium and even a Championship charge.

His season preparations are continuing to ramp up with two days at Cartagena, and then two more at Almeria, leaving Canet in "the best shape" of his young career heading into an important sophomore year in the Moto2™ World Championship.

"After two injuries during 2020," started Canet, speaking exclusively to motogp.com from Almeria. "It was a difficult year. But for this year, I’ve changed some parts of my training and I think now I’m physically in the best shape of my career. We will see what happens when we get on track with the Moto2 bike, though, because it’s really different to training here in Almeria.

"I will start completely different this year; I have a different mentality now. It’s my second year, I have some experience and I think we can start to challenge at the front like I did in Moto3. For sure, we need to work hard though, and I’ll have to give it 100%. It’s possible for me to fight for victories this year and, at the end of the year, we’ll see if it’s possible for me to fight for the Championship.

"Areas I’d like to improve this year is definitely my qualifying. The tyres in Moto2 are really, really different to those in Moto3. Now, I learnt so much about that last year, so I’ll try to improve that. My strong point I think is my rhythm during the race. In Moto3, I remember winning in Aragon because of my rhythm so I’ll try to bring that to Moto2 this year."
