First front row for Marquez in Brno

2014 Moto3™ world champion narrowly misses pole to finish qualifying in P3

It has been a tough season for Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider Alex Marquez, with flashes of pace overshadowed by too many crashes. The rider from Cervera is no stranger to the front, however, after taking the Moto3™ title in 2014 and last being on the front row in the last race of that season in Valencia. After topping FP1, Marquez has been a consistent presence in the top echelons of Moto2™ all weekend in Brno, following a solid top 6 finish in the previous round in the Austrian GP. The pace continued into qualifying for the majority of the session as Marquez was a tenth clear at the top, before last minute efforts from reigning champion Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) and Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) pushed the Spaniard back into P3.

Alex Marquez (P3): “Here all weekend we’ve done a really good job. We know there are parts to improve but the pace is really good. I hope that tomorrow will be a good race and we have the opportunity to get a first podium, but we’ll have to have an intelligent race. If we have a good start and a good first lap I think we can make some gap along with Zarco and Lowes, and then we’ll see what happens at the end of the race. I think I needed to finish a race well and build my confidence – just feel free on the bike. That was the most important thing. This is a really good track for us, we know that, but also on other tracks where we struggle a bit more we’re more competitive."
