Viñales: "Today, we did it!"

Another first time winner in 2016 reflects on his stunning demolition of the grid at Silverstone

Maverick Viñales (Team Suzuki Ecstar) had shown great pace all weekend at the British GP and lined up in third on the grid after carrying his dry form into a wet qualifying session. With an initial lead in the red-flagged first start, Viñales again took to the front on the restart and proved in a league of his own. The Spaniard pulled away from the pack lap after lap, with no one able to match him and eventually crossed the line over 3 seconds clear - having at one stage stretched the gap to over 4 seconds at the front. It was a first win for the 2013 Moto3™ world champion in MotoGP™, and the first win for a Suzuki machine since 2007 - which was in the wet - with the most recent dry victory for the Japanese manufacturer dating back to 2000. The historic day also crowned Viñales the seventh different winner in 2016, and the fourth first time victor in almost as many races as he joins Jack Miller (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS), Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) in the 2016 hall of first-time fame.

Maverick Viñales (P1): "It feels incredible, for what I've fought for all the time to come true…you know to have a race like that where all the time I could manage the gap…the lap times were so good. The team has worked so much and I'm so grateful to them. I came into the weekend thinking I could win because I've always been so great at Silverstone, and my bike was on a really good level. We did a lot of laps on the hard tyre and worked so hard. For us the restart was difficult because a lot of people put on a new tyre but we kept the same one. The key was yesterday in the rain because they gave me a bike to be able to be on the front row. Today, we did it. This is a dream come true and I hope I can give Suzuki more things like this!"
