Oettl on top in opening session of the weekend

German leads the way in Moto3™ FP1 from Canet and Bezzecchi

Philipp Oettl (Sudmetal Schedl GP Racing) hit the ground running at the GoPro British Grand Prix to end the opening session of the weekend at the top of the timesheets, setting a 2:15.489 to be the only rider in the 2:15 bracket. Aron Canet (Estrella Galicia 0,0) was second in FP1, 0.558 behind the German with Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi (Redox PrustelGP) in third – 0.009 splitting the two.

Bezzecchi’s teammate and Brno podium finisher Jakub Kornfeil was fourth quickest on Friday morning, with Marcos Ramirez (Bester Capital Dubai) rounding out the top five on a sunny but chilly Silverstone – the only other rider to get within a second of Oettl.

It wasn’t the start to his home Grand Prix that John McPhee (CIP – Green Power) would have been looking for after the Scotsman suffered a heavy crash at Turn 4 with 30 minutes remaining, thankfully he was declared fit after going to the medical centre for a checkup.

British wildcard Tom Booth-Amos (Leopard Racing) also crashed in the session – rider ok.

Tune in for Moto3™ FP2 at 13:10 local time (GMT +1).
