Red Bull Rookies Champion eligible for Moto3™ ride in 2018

Grand Prix Commission confirm the decision, allowing Can Öncü to compete at an event this season

At a meeting held in Assen, the Grand Prix Commission decided that the winner of the Red Bull MotoGP™ Rookies Championship should be entitled to receive an FIM Grand Prix licence, valid for the Moto3™ World Championship, even if the age of the winning rider was below 16. This brought the regulations into line with those applicable to the winner of the FIM Junior World Championship. It was also decided to establish that the minimum age for such riders to receive the licence is 15.

The FIM World Championship Grand Prix Regulations were updated accordingly. However, in the press release announcing this decision, it was erroneously indicated that the decision became effective from the 2019 season.

The Commission wishes to state by way of clarification that, once the rider has won the Championship and has been granted the FIM licence, he is eligible to compete in the corresponding Grand Prix events, including in the 2018 season.
