The season’s half-way point is an appropriate time to evaluate the engine usage of each MotoGP rider to date. After nine races across eight countries in four continents, riders have had ample opportunity to test their machines for speed and endurance.
The premier class’ six manufacturers fall into two categories: those without concessions (Honda, Ducati, Yamaha and Suzuki) and those with concessions (KTM and Aprilia).
Manufacturers without concessions are allowed a maximum of seven engines throughout the 19-race championship. At the first round in March, their motors are sealed and no engine development is permitted through the season.
No rider from Honda, Ducati, Yamaha or Suzuki has exceeded four engines. What is of note is both Jorge Lorenzo and Takaaki Nakagami have had one engine withdrawn, which means it can no longer be used. Avintia Ducati’s Tito Rabat has also had one engine withdrawn.
Those manufacturers with concessions are permitted to use as many as nine engines per season. What’s more engine development isn’t frozen throughout the year so KTM and Aprilia can bring updates for their motor as the season progresses.
Three of KTM’s four riders (Pol Espargaro, Miguel Oliveira and Hafizh Syahrin) have used five engines in the first nine races, while the other – Johann Zarco – has had four. Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro and Andrea Iannone have also used four each.
