Klaus Nohles, who calls himself 'The Firebird', threatened to set the world alight after lifting the 125cc European Championship in 1999, when he was touted as Germany's best hope for Grand Prix success. In 2000 he joined experienced countryman Ralf Waldmann in the Aprilia Germany squad and took two top five finishes in his first season in the 250 World Championship. Great things were expected of Nohles in 2001 but the flamboyant 25 year old became involved in several disputes and missed the final five races of the season after an acrimonious split with his team. This season Nohles will be looking to finally secure his reputation as a serious title contender as he drops back down to the 125 class.
