Biaggi continues Yamaha success at Jerez IRTA test

Max Biaggi was the fastest man at the second day of 500cc IRTA tests in Jerez. The Marlboro Yamaha man´s quickest lap of 1´42.847 was under his pole position time from last season, and capped off an excellent day for Yamaha riders. Four of the five quickest riders over the first two days are on Yamaha machinery, as Garry McCoy (Red Bull Yamaha) improved his best time from yesterday to become third fastest overall behind West Honda Pons rider Loris Capirossi, whilst McCoy´s team-mate Noriyuki Haga set an excellent lap and lies fifth fastest. Biaggi´s Marlboro Yamaha counterpart Carlos Checa was unable to improve on yesterday´s performance and his quickest lap is now the fourth fastest time over the two days.

´We´ve set a great lap but I´m not really satisfied´ said Biaggi afterwards. ´We´ve had chattering problems and I don´t know if that´s to do with the 16.5 inch tyres or not. Also the suspension hasn´t been right and although we´ve set a good time today, in a GP it´s got to go fast for 20 laps - not just one. Even though the bike is pretty much the same as last year - the only new thing really is the fairing - it is a lot more difficult to ride than say a Honda, so we´ve still got a lot of work to do before the start of the season´.

From the 250cc riders Daijiro Katoh was again quickest, although he didn´t manage to improve on yesterday´s time. 125cc World Champion Roberto Locatelli however improved significantly having moved up to 250cc for 2001, shaving almost 2 seconds off his previous day´s best. Most 250cc riders bettered their times from yesterday, but will be looking to improve even further tomorrow in what will be the final day of the test.
