Biaggi quickest on second day of 500 and 250 IRTA tests in Estoril

Biaggi quickest on second day of 500 and 250 IRTA tests in Estoril

Max Biaggi set the quickest lap on the second day of 500 and 250 tests at the Fernanda Pires Da Silva racetrack in Estoril, Portugal, during a session marked by unfortunate crashes for a number of riders. World Champion Kenny Roberts Jr. and his Telefonica Movistar Suzuki team-mate Sete Gibernau were among the fallers, as Marlboro Yamaha man Biaggi cruised to a best lap of 1.40.149. Surprise package of the day was the ´Flying Dutchman´ Jurgen vd Goorbergh, who finished the day second quickest on the Proton KR 3 machine. Biaggi´s Marlboro Yamaha partner Carlos Checa was third quickest, ahead of Garry McCoy on the Red Bull Yamaha and West Honda Pons rider Alex Barros.

Biaggi appeared satisfied with his time, although insisted that he wasn´t out to set the quickest lap. ´The main thing we were looking to test here in Estoril was the tyres´ he explained. ´My experience last year when I fell during tests and ended up below fitness at the start of the season taught me not to push too much in pre-season. We go to Valencia next week, and then we move on to Barcelona and Suzuka where we will be testing the new parts more intensively in preparation for the first race´.

Despite sunny and calm weather conditions, Roberts Jr. and Gibernau were joined on the deck by Leon Haslam and Shinya Nakano, although none of the riders suffered serious injury. Roberts Jr. crashed just before lunchtime at corner number 4 – known as the VIP corner - and later explained ´I was trying a new tyre and I guess I didn´t compensate for it when I went into the corner. I entered too fast and lost control. The tyre was giving me problems but I didn’t expect to fall – you´re never prepared for a crash. We´re trying to integrate new things to the bike and we´ve had a few problems, but I´m sure I will learn from this situation´.

Daijiro Katoh continued his pre-season domination of the 250 class by setting the quickest time once again on the Telefonica Movistar Honda. The Japanese rider has carried his good form from Jerez across the border to Portugal and today finished almost a second quicker than his nearest rival - MS Aprilia Racing rider Marco Melandri.
