Daijiro Katoh leads the way at his home racetrack

Local hero Daijiro Katoh was impressive in the first free practice qualifying session of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. The Telefonica Movistar Honda sensation was over half a second quicker than Italian Marco Melandri, who rode his MS Aprilia to the second fastest time overall.

Katoh´s countryman Naoki Matsudo was third quickest on the Petronas Srinta Yamaha TVK, followed by Valencia Circuit Aspar Team rider Fonsi Nieto in fourth place and Aprilia Grand Prix man Jeremy McWilliams who was fifth fastest. Both Franco Battaini and Sylvain Guintoli slipped off but remained unhurt.
