Nieto quickest in 250 warm-up and Melandri is fit to race

Fonsi Nieto went quickest in the 250cc morning warm-up for the Grand Prix of Japan.

Most of the top runners tentatively lapped the Suzuka circuit a few seconds off yesterday´s pace. Overcast and gloomy weather this morning has mean that the track temperature has cooled in comparison with the two days.Daijiro Katoh did not head the timing sheets for the first time this weekend, but the Telefonica Honda rider signalled his intent by posting the second quickest time. 125cc World Champion Roberto Locatelli was third while Franco Battaini showed no ill signs of his huge crash yesterday by finishing fourth fastest.

Factory Aprilia rider Marco Melandri completed several laps and decided that he is fit enough to race. He dislocated his shoulder yesterday when he crashed heavily, but clocked a time this morning that was only two seconds off Nieto´s best. His chances for a top position might be limited, but hopes for some world championship points are realistic.

Fallers included Spaniard Jeronimo Vidal, who fell from his Aprilia and injured his lower leg.
