Ui makes pole in this afternoon´s final 125cc qualifying session

Derbi flyer Youichi Ui left it late but made pole position for tomorrow´s 125cc Grand Prix of Japan. Ui was pushed all the way by Gilera rider Manuel Poggiali, who looked like he might steal pole in the dying stages, and Aprilia´s Lucio Cecchinello - impressive throughout the session. Poggiali, of San Marino, and Italian Cecchinello gatecrashed the Japanese party after the top five qualifiers from yesterday´s session were home riders. Ui was not to be denied on his home track though, whilst Masao Azuma kept his Honda in the top positions and makes up the front row.

Steve Jenkner charged his Aprilia into fifth with an impressive late surge, whilst the Italian factory also have Gino Borsoi on the second row in sixth position. Nobby Ueda takes up a disappointing seventh place on the grid, although insisted he was using the session to find the right race set-up, and is joined on the second row by Stefano Perugini who had an excellent session on the Italjet.

Wildcard Kikuchi, fifth in yesterday´s first qualifying session, crashed and ended up back in 21st on the grid, whilst Toni Elias suffered his second crash of the weekend but qualified in 16th. Both riders avoided injury and will ride tomorrow.
