Youichi Ui takes last gasp provisional pole from Ueda

Youichi Ui took provisional pole in the first qualifying session for the 125cc Gauloises Africa´s Grand Prix. The Derbi rider set his fastest time on the very last lap of the period, although it looked as though he was going to miss out after getting caught in traffic on the final few corners. Ui relegated Nobby Ueda to second spot after the TSR-Honda rider had set the pace for much of the session.

The Japanese pair were joined at the top of the time sheets by Manuel Poggiali and Arnaud Vincent, who make up the provisional front row in third and fourth positions respectively. Lucio Cecchinello maintains his good form from the first round in Japan and takes 5th place; next to Italian compatriot and fellow Aprilia rider Max Sabbatani, who qualified in sixth. Another Aprilia rider, Gino Borsoi, takes up eighth position while Gianluigi Scalvini on the Italjet completes the provisional second row of the grid.

Fallers in the session included winner of the last two 125cc Grand Prix Masao Azuma. He crashed his Honda but was unhurt. Another Honda rider, Angel Rodriguez, also hit the tarmac and appeared to be very shaken after the incident. He was escorted by doctors back to his team garage where they then confirmed he was okay.
