Locatelli quickest in unusual 250 first free practice

The 250 first free practice session of the Gran Premio Marlboro de España took a slightly different pattern to the previous rouns in Japan and South Africa. Instead of the Honda of Daijiro Katoh and the Aprilia of Marco Melandri, dominating proceedings, a whole clutch of different riders took turns at the top of the time sheets.

Roberto Locatelli set the quickest time of the session overall with just a couple of minutes remaining, but Emilio Alzamora, Naoki Matsudo and wildcard veteran Marcelino Lucchi were among those to raise eyebrows with some consistent riding.

Katoh had a quiet session, setting the quickest lap with ten minutes to go only to be bettered by Tetsuya Harada and then Locatelli. Lucchi´s efforts were enough to seal the fourth fastest time for him in an encouraging return to MotoGP action, whilst Alzamora will be pleased with his preliminary preparations for his home GP after clocking the fifth best time of the session.

The sun has finally beaten back much of the dark clouds hanging over Jerez throughout the morning and it looks like the circuit will be dry for the afternoon qualifying sessions after all.
