Carlos Checa and his spectacular fall in the second 500 qualifying practice

Carlos Checa returned from injury to take part in the Gran Premio Marlboro de España only to fall twice before the race even got underway. His first piece of bad luck came when he slid from his Marlboro Yamaha in this morning´s practice session but emerged unhurt and was able to re-join before the clock ran down.

He wasn´t so lucky this afternoon though when he high-sided at the same corner Mick Doohan´s career came to a premature end. Checa was catapulted into the air before a spectacular somersault and a less than graceful landing on the tarmac. The Spaniard tumbled into the gravel, a helpless spectator as his YZR 500 bounced and flipped into the tyre wall.
