Ui takes third consecutive pole of season in 125 final qualifying session

Youichi Ui took his Spanish factory Derbi machine to pole position for the Gran Premio Marlboro de España to the delight of the home fans who are already packing out the Jerez circuit. The Spaniards had more reason to cheer as Manuel Poggiali lined up alongside Ui for the second time this season to start the race from second spot on the Spanish produced Gilera. Poggiali joins the front row for the third time after qualifying third in South Africa a fortnight ago.

Lucio Cecchinello also makes his third successive front four start after taking third spot and showed no bad signs from the spill he had yesterday. He is joined by fellow Italian Stefano Perugini, who put in an excellent late lap on the Italjet to make a surprise first appearance on the front row of the grid this season. It is Italjet´s best ever qualifying performance.

Simone Sanna headed the second row accompanied by Spanish youngster Toni Elias obviously keen to impress at his home GP. Nobby Ueda took his TSR Honda to seventh, while winner of the Japanese race Masao Azuma completed the front two ranks by scoring the eighth quickest time.

Eric Bataille fell for the second time this weekend and was joined by Gaspare Caffiero in the dirt; both riders were unhurt. Gianluigi Scalvini and Pablo Nieto retired from the session.
