Lucchi takes the limelight in 250 warm-up

Veteran rider Marcellino Lucchi sent out a warning shot to the young pretenders in the 250 class this morning by setting consistently fast lap times in the warm-up session. The battle-hardened Aprilia man has dusted off his leathers for the Gran Premio Marlboro de España and he showed that he has lost none of his talents by lapping 0.224 seconds quicker than his closest rival Roberto Locatelli. The 44 year old, who made his Grand Prix debut back in 1982 and has five podium appearances to his name, starts from second place on the grid behind Daijiro Katoh in pole.

Katoh had a steady morning session, setting the seventh quickest time. No rider is better equipped for the big occasion though and rivals to the young Japanese sensation know only too well that he will be the man to beat this afternoon. Marco Melandri started to show that he is finding the right setting for the Aprilia despite less than impressive times over the weekend qualifying sessions; he was third.

Nobody knows the Jerez circuit better than Emilio Alzamora and he received a good reception from his home crowd, setting a solid lap time on his Honda after moving up a class from the 125 series in which he took victory here last year. Alzamora was fifth behind Fonsi Nieto.
