Youchi Ui on provisional pole at Le Mans

Youchi Ui on provisional pole at Le Mans

Youchi Ui showed that his steady performance in this morning´s practice was no need for alarm as he dominated the rain hit first qualifying session this afternoon to take provisional pole for Sunday´s race. The Japanese Derbi rider sliced through the damp on the surface of the track as heavy rainfall just before the session had threatened to throw proceedings into chaos.

He was joined by a couple of surprise names at the top of the time sheets in the shape of Jarno Muller and Gabor Talmacsi, with the latter having earned a reputation as a wet specialist in his native Hungary. Talmacsi´s success was short lived however and as the sun came out to dry up the track, Manuel Poggiali, Gianluigi Scalvini and Lucio Cecchinello all returned to the top of the time sheets to make up the provisional front row behind Ui in that order.

Toni Elias continues to make a name for himself and his confidence is clearly growing with each passing Grand Prix. Today he qualified in fifth position and is joined on the provisional second row by further familiar names in the shape of Stefano Perugini, who is also making progress on the Italjet machine, Gino Borsoi and Max Sabbatani.

Championship leader Masao Azuma qualified in a lowly twelfth and will be hoping for better conditions for tomorrow´s final qualifying session, as will Nobby Ueda and Simone Sanna, who also had a disappointing day´s work.
