Repsol Honda

The first qualifying session for the Italian Grand Prix on the Mugello circuit brought the Italian motorcycle racing fans the excitement they expected, with the three local heroes Rossi, Capirossi and Biaggi being the centre of attention in their battle for the best grid positions. But the Repsol YPF Honda riders didn´t have much luck: Tohru Ukawa, who took a provisional eleventh place in the end, crashed during the session, and even though he walked away unhurt, the Japanese ace lost a lot of valuable time trying to find the right set-up for his machine. Alex Crivillé, who planned to work hard on the set-up today in order to attack and to go for a fast lap tomorrow, put in the nineth fastest lap and hopes to be able to make up some positions and climb up to the second row of the grid.

´I´m fine, I didn´t get hurt in my crash, but obviously it was a major delay in the search for the best set-up of my bike. It happened in turn eleven, I lost the front end of the bike and I bashed the index finger of my right hand quite hard, but I don´t think that this will cause any problems. This morning, we had to work hard on the suspension to get rid of some front end chatter, and to get more feel for the front tyre. In the afternoon, we continued to try different solutions in order to improve the behaviour of the bike, but at the moment, I still don´t feel comfortable. This circuit is very complicated and technical on a 500, much more than with the 250.´

´We had a lot of work today, some carburation problems have cost us quite a lot of time. I went in and out my garage lots of times, and my number one bike, the one that we are preparing for the race, didn´t work well until the end of practice. In the last minutes, I went out again to chase a good lap time, which allowed me to make up a few positions, but we are still far from the best times. We´ll continue to work tomorrow, we´ll try to find a set-up that allows me to go fast and to make sure of a good grid position. Despite the crash in France, I feel physically fit. I had a small wound on the right arm, but it’s already closing.´
