Giansanti taken to hospital after 125 crash, Cecchinello fastest time

A spectacular crash between Mirko Giansanti and Pablo Nieto was the focus of attention in the second free practice session for the 250 class this morning at Mugello. Nieto lost control of his Derbi when he touched with the rumble strip and highsided into the path of Giansanti. The Italian hit Nieto´s bike, and was flipped into the air before coming down heavily onto the asphalt. The pair looked in bad shape but as Nieto got to his feet and dusted himself down, Giansanti was airlifted to a local hospital for checks on a haematoma in his neck which could keep him out of action for the rest of the weekend. The extent of the injury is not yet known, although doctors stressed that the helicopter was only used to avoid traffic around the circuit.

Lucio Cecchinello meanwhile set the fastest lap of the session, just ahead of the resurgent Youichi Ui. Japanese rider Ui´s performance was impressive, as he set a late fast lap to overcome problems he seemed to be experiencing yesterday.

Cecchinello has looked consistent throughout the weekend so far and is one of the favourites for tomorrow´s race. Gino Borsoi also looked in good form, as did Italian compatriot and wildcard rider Andrea Ballerini, who was fourth fastest behind Borsoi.

Provisional pole setter Toni Elias was sixth fastest, whilst Masao Azuma´s misery continued with 14th fastest time.
