Team Telefonica Movistar Suzuki Press Release

Team Telefonica Movistar Suzuki Press Release

Team Telefonica MoviStar Suzuki rider Sete Gibernau was on the pace from the start of today´s first qualifying sessions for Sunday´s Catalunyan GP, consigning previous niggling problems firmly to the past as he even went faster than team-mate Kenny Roberts Junior to end up seventh overall, in the thick of the fast times.

Roberts was 14th after a disappointing day, with hoped-for tyre improvements failing to materialise - the single version of the revised 16.5-inch rear Michelin developed by the team that arrived today did not offer any benefits. But the American was confident he could improve on today´s lap time in tomorrow´s qualifying sessions for a better grid position for the race.

This is very much the home GP for Gibernau, who lives close to the Catalan capital, and can expect many fans among the big crowds certain to pack the track on Sunday for the second GP of the year on Spanish soil.

The first practice day for the race at the ultra-modern Montmelo circuit was held in warm, sunny conditions - but mixed weather is expected for tomorrow.

SETE GIBERNAU - Seventh position, 1:46.601

We´re doing nothing different here, and there´s nothing different about the way I am riding. It just seems that everything is clicking together better. From my side I have to thank the guys in the team, and then try and keep things together for tomorrow and the next day. Our base is not great, and you can see from Kenny´s time that a little imperfection can cost us a lot. I´m pushing the front quite a bit on the fast corners, and there are a lot of places here where you have a big lean angle for a long time, and when you lose traction it´s difficult to use the throttle to control the spin. We´ll try and make those things better for tomorrow.

KENNY ROBERTS - 14th position, 1:47.316

I didn´t have any problems today. The bike was perfect. If I push really hard maybe I can get within half-a-second of pole time - that will in no way reflect my race pace.

GARRY TAYLOR - Team Manager

Kenny is in a confident frame of mind, and it´s great to see Sete up there so early in the weekend for his home GP.
