Roberts shows capabilities in second free practice session

World Champion Kenny Roberts made it clear this morning that yesterday´s 14th place in the First Qualifying Practice, was something he would be hoping to change this afternoon. In this morning´s second free practice, the American set a lap time which would have had him in provisional second on the grid and just 0.03 behind Capirossi.

Roberts, riding his Telefonica Movistar Suzuki, set the fastest lap on just his eighth lap out of 22 and was able to ride comfortably, watching the others try to beat him. Nobody could get close, with Rossi and Capirossi, 0.457 and 0.474 seconds behind him respectively. Many of the riders spent time in the pits, as it seemed that people were more content to not push their bikes until the afternoon sessions. Roberts time was 1:45.618, in comparison to Criville´s Best Pole time of 1:45.583, showing that the Suzuki will be competitive later today, and tomorrow.

Obviously, though, nothing can be read too deeply into the free practice. While it demonstrates that Roberts has the capabilities to go quick, we still don´t know how quick the others can go, and who will be the ones to show. Mugello winner Alex Barros was fourth overall, while Repsol Honda rider Tohru Ukawa was in fifth.
