Rossi takes fourth pole of season

Rossi takes fourth pole of season

Valentino Rossi took his fourth pole position out of the first six races of the season today in the final qualifying session of the Gran Premi Marlboro de Catalunya. The Italian set one late fast lap on a soft tyre but it was enough to knock countryman Loris Capirossi off the top of time sheets after the Honda Pons man failed to improve his provisional pole time from yesterday.

Capirossi was relegated to third when he failed to emerge from the pit lane in time on a soft tyre, allowing Shinya Nakano to put his Yamaha in second spot behind Rossi and consolidate his position as the fastest rider of the session for the Japanese factory. Nakano continues to impress his 500 rivals after moving up to the half-litre class from 250.

Max Biaggi also put in a fast lap make the front row of the grid although he was unable to dislodge Italian compatriot Capirossi and had to settle for fourth place. His late charge dropped Alex Barros to the second row in 5th place, pushing Jurgen vd Goorbergh out to sixth. Dutch rider vd Goorbergh has enjoyed excellent lap times in the warm conditions and will no doubt be delighted to make the second row on the 3 cylinder Proton machine.

Kenny Roberts and Norick Abe make up the top eight, whilst Catalan riders racing at their home Grand Prix, Gibernau, Criville and Checa line up on the third row behind Ukawa in that order.
