Borsoi back in style at Assen

Borsoi back in style at Assen

Gino Borsoi proved to the doubters of his Championship credentials today that he is a serious title contender with the first pole position of his career in the 125 final qualifying session for the Dutch TT at Assen. The Italian had lead the Championship going into the last round at Catalunya despite not having won a race all season, but relinquished his position to Manuel Poggiali after finishing 18th to raise questions about his title chances. However, he has looked on top form here in Holland and lapped throughout the session with team-mate Steve Jenkner as the pair set consistently fast times throughout the session.

The LAE-UGT pair towed each other around the 6049m circuit and German rider Jenkner eventually made the front row by qualifying with the fourth quickest time overall. The duo are joined by Lucio Cecchinello, who followed up his pole position in Catalunya with the second fastest time here, and Youichi Ui. Ui has looked solid all weekend and may at last be finding the form he showed in the first couple of races of the season, when he lead the Championship, before sliding down the standings with a series of bad results.

Crowd favourites Toni Elias and Manuel Poggiali qualified in fifth and sixth respectively. Young Spanish hope Elias has made some excellent starts from the second row already this season and his Telefonica Movistar Honda will certainly be one to watch when the red light goes out tomorrow.
