Elias bursting with confidence as he sets benchmark in 125 practice

Ever since his third placed ride in Le Mans, the name of Toni Elias has been growing in stature within the sport as he keeps proving his worth within a team who at Assen, don´t even have a pit box. Once again this morning, he showed that he means business in the seventh round of the 125 World Championships this morning with a dominating display in the second free practice session.

Elias set the fastest time on his second lap of the session, and as he kept extending his lead over the other riders, to as much as 2.5 seconds at one point, he remained untouchable at the head of the pack. His fastest lap was just outside the best lap of the Assen track, which was set by Lucio Cecchinello in 1999. His 2´12.870, if he could reproduce it this afternoon, would stand him in good stead in the qualifiers, as it is over half a second quicker than yesterday´s fastest time.

Behind Elias came a late charge from Youichi Ui, who was a whole 0.885 behind the young Spaniard. Then it was Cecchinello and Ueda who kept improving throughout the session. The only faller was Raul Jara, although both Pedrosa and Jenkner ran off the track and had a long trudge back to the pits.
