Daijiro Katoh back to his brilliant best at Donington

Daijiro Katoh returned to his breathtaking best in this afternoon´s 250 race with a comfortable winning margin of 10.173 seconds over second placed Roberto Rolfo despite taking an off track excursion across the grass. The Japanese Honda rider extended his Championship lead to 40 points as title rival Tetsuya Harada suffered from mechanical problems and slipped all the way back to a final position of 18th despite having contested the lead with his compatriot for the first 5 laps.

Rolfo held off the attentions of fellow Aprilia rider Marco Melandri to record his best finish of the season after overtaking his Italian countryman with 3 laps left. The pair had contested the podium positions with home rider Jeremy McWilliams until the Briton lost control of his Aprilia on the 15th lap and crashed out.

Emilio Alzamora had also looked like he may be in the fight for then rostrum, although Melandri and Rolfo proved too fast and he had to settle for a creditable fourth. The Spaniard now lies fifth in the Championship behind Katoh, Harada, Melandri and Rolfo in that order.
