Valentino Rossi brings Biaggi back to earth

Valentino Rossi dealt the title hopes of arch rival Max Biaggi a huge blow this weekend by beating him just when the Yamaha seemed to be at it´s strongest. Biaggi arrived at Donington claiming to be in the best form of his career, with his motorcycle performing like never before. On Friday he took pole position as Rossi hit the floor in spectacular fashion. On Saturday, the ´Roman Emperor´ saved himself as rain interrupted the final qualifying session, and everything seemed set up for him to take his second consecutive victory.

However, Rossi had other plans and, unfortunately for Max, they were based around his immense talent for riding a motorcycle. Way down the field on his Honda at the start of the race, Rossi staged a repeat of his recent performances by steadily making his way through the field to the front of the pack. From there he edged his way into the lead before establishing a comfortable advantage which provided a cushion against last minute slip-ups on the last few laps. The gap was more than enough to seal Honda´s 150th victory in the 500cc category, and Rossi immediately rated the win as one of his finest ever.

Now Rossi holds a 26 point advantage over Biaggi, although we are only at the halfway stage and nothing is decided yet. However, it cannot be denied that the Honda rider has knocked his Yamaha adversary from his pedestal, and re-established his status as the number one candidate for the title.

500cc, 2001, Valentino Rossi
