Elias continues outstanding form at Sachsenring 125 qualifying

Toni Elias followed up his first ever pole position in the last race at Donington Park with provisional pole here in Germany, confirming his status as the man to beat in the 125 class. Elias took over at the top of the rider standings from fellow Spanish youngster Angel Rodriguez with around 10 minutes remaining of the session, and held off the challenge of Max Sabbatani, Simone Sanna and Pablo Nieto, although only just.

Sabbatani was just 0.008 seconds slower than the Honda rider and will have to make do with second place on the grid at least until tomorrow´s final qualifying sessions get underway. He was closely followed by fellow Italian Sanna, third on the grid, whilst Spanish rider Nieto´s late efforts were enough to seal him a plcae on the provisional front row.

Rodriguez was eventually pushed down to sixth place thanks to a late charge from current Championship leader Manuel Poggiali, whilst Lucio Cecchinello was unable to dislodge the 16 year old Spaniard after taking an off-track excursion with just minutes of the session remaining. Youichi Ui, winner here last year, completes the front row, whilst his Japanese rival Masao Azuma crashed and could only qualify 18th.
