A cloud front darkened the skies during the first qualifying session of the German Grand Prix on the Sachsenring, but luckily, the weather stayed dry for the field of 500 riders. Alex Crivillé, who took twelfth place so far, went out with a similar set-up to the one he used at the last race in England, but even though he felt more comfortable than in the British Grand Prix, he still has to improve his lap times in tomorrow´s final practice in order to make sure of a second-row start in the race. His team-mate Tohru Ukawa, one of the fastest stars in Suzuka last week when he tested in preparation for the 8 hours of Suzuka, finished right behind Alex Crivillé, and is confident to be able to improve his lap times and to reach out for a better position on the grid.

´My times today haven´t been good, but my feeling on the bike improved considerably in comparison to last week in Donington. The bike itself as well as the tyres give me much more safety and and confidence, which allows me to ride in a relaxed and comfortable way. I still have chattering, but thanks to a few changes, the bike has improved this afternoon. I like this circuit, last year I finished second on the 250, and I´m sure I can improve my lap times and move up on the grid tomorrow. It´s a tight track with many curves, very complicated on a 500. To achieve better lap times, I have to improve on the first section of the track, where I lose quite some time so far.´

´Like always, we have been working on the set-up of the bike, looking for a configuration that allows me to ride with comfort and confidence. But at the moment, I can´t push the bike in the corners the way I´d like to, because I don´t trust the front end. If I go into a turn really hard, it feels as if the bike wants to run wide and it starts to chatter, and obviously this doesn´t give me a feeling of safety. We will change some things on the bike for tomorrow in order to see if we can find these few little improvements that will allow me to go faster by a few tenths of a second, because on a twisty circuit like that, even little details may be crucial and can help a lot in the hunt for better lap times and a better position on the grid.´
