Dark clouds hang over Sachsenring as rain affects Saturday´s practices

Winner of the last round at Donington, Youichi Ui was fastest in the 125cc second free practice this morning, which took part under dark and threatening clouds at Sachsenring. The track was wet as light rain had fallen early on, and though some parts dried during the session, the lower parts of the circuit remained damp, and the riders were forced into using wet tyres. The forecast for the rest of the day is for more showers, but the hopes are that the qualifiers this afternoon can go ahead on a dry surface.

Ui set the fastest time on his 17th out of 18 laps, after having seen Frenchman Arnaud Vincent lead for a great deal of the session. His time of 1´39.897 is over 8 seconds behind that of Elias´ provisional pole yesterday, showing the effect the wet had on the riders´ performance. Vincent was impressive, lapping quicker than most throughout the 45 minute practice, and will hope that he can repeat the same form in a dry qualifying session to lift himself up from the 13th place he currently has on the grid. Behind Ui and Vincent, came Azuma, Sanna, Smrz and Scalvini. Elias finished 8th quickest, with his rival and current championship leader Manuel Poggiali just ahead of him in seventh.

There were three fallers in the soggy conditions, Alex De Angelis, Alessandro Brannetti and wildcard Mika Kallio, the latter two took no further part in the practice but are both fit to ride this afternoon.
