Double top ten for Suzuki stars

Double top ten for Suzuki stars

Team Telefonica MoviStar Suzuki riders Kenny Roberts Jr. and Sete Gibernau finished ninth and tenth, in line astern, after a thrilling German GP that upset the form book and closed the first part of the season with a fillip for the championship.

The two Suzuki riders had qualified side by side, in ninth and tenth positions, and ended up in the same place after 30 laps of the short and twisty 3.704km Sachsenring circuit outside Chemnitz in the former East Germany.

Both had been higher earlier in the race, but ended up in a huge pack of factory machines locked together, with six bikes crossing the line in the space of little more than three seconds.

By then, Max Biaggi had already crossed the line for his second win of the season, starting from pole position, and leading from start to finish. Points leader Valentino Rossi could do no better than seventh.

The German GP was the ninth of 16 rounds of the 2001 World Championship season, and precedes a four-weekend summer break before the last seven races in Europe, Malaysia, Japan, Australia and Brazil.

KENNY ROBERTS - Ninth Position

It was a close race, but I couldn´t think about anything except my throttle. If I even looked at the other guys around me, I was in big trouble. The bike ran okay, but the throttle connection problem is the same as ever. It´s very, very disappointing. I hope that in the break Suzuki can help us improve our situation. We´re absolutely not competitive at this time, and that´s not what any of us want. I hope we can combine all our efforts, and solve our problems to compete again.

SETE GIBERNAU - Tenth Position

Down the steep hill, I couldn´t put the front wheel down at all, and I was spinning all through the fast right-hander at the bottom. The same as with Kenny - you just have to concentrate on your own race, your own bike and your own lines, rather than try and race with anybody. It was a hard afternoon - but I´m used to that. I tried my best, and got the best result possible.

GARRY TAYLOR - Team Manager

It was a disappointing result - for the team and the riders. I think they wrung every bit of performance they could out of the machines. The factory is working on fixing our problems, and we´re aiming at coming back stronger for the second part of the season.
