Ui dominates 125 practice to take provisional pole

Youichi Ui was one step ahead of his 125cc rivals in a slow first qualifying session for the Gauloises Czech Grand Prix at Brno this afternoon. The Derbi flyer headed the time sheets throughout the session, but surprisingly was rarely challenged for top spot by Toni Elias or Nobby Ueda, who had set quicker times in this morning´s free practice. Ueda fell from his FCC-TSR Honda machine midway through the session but returned on his spare bike to make a late surge onto the front row in third spot behind Simone Sanna. Ueda´s time, set after the chequered flag had been waved, squeezed Masao Azuma out to fourth place and knocked Gabor Talmacsi off the front row.

Hungarian racer Talmacsi has been the surprise package of the day, setting the third quickest time of this morning´s practice and holding a front row spot throughout the first qualifying session. His previous best qualifying position this season was sixteenth, at Le Mans, and he looks sure to better that in tomorrow´s final qualifying practice. He currently heads a provisional second row which also features Elias in sixth, Cecchinello in seventh and Giansanti in eighth.

Championship leader Manuel Poggiali was one of five riders to crash out of the session, eventually qualifying in 15th place after returning to the track on his spare Gilera machine. Alex de Angelis and Angel Rodriguez both suffered minor falls and escaped without injury, although Gino Borsoi was not quite so lucky when he was thrown over the handlebars of his Aprilia. The Italian suffered a nasty wound on his left knee and a sub-dislocation of his right wrist as he landed front first on the tarmac.
