Melandri makes his mark in Aprilia assault

It was an interesting second free practice for the 250cc machines here at Brno. The Aprilia machines made their mark on the session, finishing in the top five places after the hour, with MS Aprilia rider Marco Melandri fastest, winner of the last round in Sachsenring, and of his first 250 GP. His time was not up with Harada´s new circuit best of yesterday afternoon, but what it did show that despite Katoh and Honda´s stranglehold on the championship, Melandri and his Aprilia colleagues have not given up the ghost.

The session was mainly a case of the Italian Melandri trading top spot with Britain´s Jeremy McWilliams, the two changing places frequently during the practice. Katoh had posted a good time early on, but gradually saw himself pushed back out by the flying Italian machines. Melandri ´s time was 2´04.051, over half a second outside Harada´s pole of yesterday, the Japanese rider himself could only make the fourth quickest time after a late surge from Frenchman Randy de Puniet took him into third. The fifth of the Aprilias was Roberto Locatelli´s bike, relegating Katoh and his team-mate Alzamora down the order.

There were a couple of crashes in the session, with recent addition to the championship Jay Vincent putting his QUB Team Optimum bike into the gravel, as well as another fall from Sylvain Guintoli.
